TB Continuity of Operations (COOP)

What it is:

In the event of an influenza pandemic, TB control staff will likely be pulled from their normal duties to deal with influenza patients. TB control staff are uniquely suited to do this because of their experience in dealing with respiratory infections, understanding of transmission, multilingual capabilities, training in contact investigation and home visits, and experience in dealing with patients on home isolation. Also, it is expected that some TB control staff or their family members may become ill with pandemic influenza, thus leading to fewer staff to continue TB control activities. Therefore, for pandemic preparedness and general emergency preparations, continuity of operations planning (COOP) is important to ensure that critical TB control activities continue to prevent TB transmission and outbreaks in the community. Such planning would also be useful for other public health emergencies (outbreaks, bioterrorist events) or natural disasters (earthquake, etc.) that may affect the normal functioning of a TB control program.
